Human Rights Awareness and Education: Building on training 504 volunteers across Kigezi, SAFU-Uganda conducts intensive community sensitization meetings in villages, town councils, and schools on fundamental human rights, constitutional rights, and civic responsibilities. We host interactive radio talk shows in Rukiga/Rufumbira and community dialogues where leaders and citizens discuss rights issues. We distribute simplified IEC materials - posters, brochures, and translated booklets - making human rights information accessible to low-literacy communities to foster a culture of rights awareness and respect.
Prevention of Gender Based Violence: SAFU-Uganda runs targeted campaigns against domestic violence, sexual abuse, and harmful practices in both formal workplaces and informal households. We facilitate community by-laws discussions, engage men and boys as allies, and create safe spaces for survivors to report. We specifically educate parents, cultural leaders, and school committees on the dangers of child and forced marriages, keeping girls in school and linking at-risk cases to community-based services and district probation offices to ensure protection and justice.
Advocacy and Policy Engagement: We hold advocacy meetings with district technical staff, police, and local council leaders to demand accountability, transparency, and equal treatment before the law. When violations occur, SAFU-Uganda organizes peaceful community dialogues and demonstrations, documents cases, and follows up for redress. We advocate for gender-responsive budgeting and implementation of laws protecting women and youth rights, ensuring local government policies are inclusive and non-discriminatory based on ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.
